Day 41 (Aug. 2nd) - SLACK PACK DAY

Start: Great Barrington (US7)
Finish: Great Barrington (MA23)
Today: 8.4 mi
Total: 339.7 mi

Heather must have a pretty thumb because it only took her 5 minutes to land us a ride back to where we left off. In New Jersey and New York people met our extended thumbs with confused, incredulous expressions so it's nice to be in a hiker friendly state!

Trail magic! Before we even started down the trail we spotted a cooler full of ice cold sodas. We each grabbed one to drink at the view 4.3 miles in. Because the trail winds around Great Barrington and comes within 5 miles of it again we decided to do an easier day (8.4 mi) and hitchhike back to town. Even nicer, since we kept the same hotel room, we only brought the necessities which decreased my pack weight by 25 pounds! Slack packing, as they call it, is amazing!

Even with her trail name of Flicka, I think Heather is closer akin to horses because when she saw a baby snake slither in front of her she let out a high-pitched, girly neighing noise. Actually, it sounded almost exactly like the opening of the Beach Boys song "wipe out."

While enjoying the breeze, blue skies, rolling mountains and soda we heard an eagle shrieked twice while suspended in a breeze (we looked it up and think it was a Golden Eagle even though it was a couple hundred miles south of where they like to be in the summer - maybe it was a southbound eagle!). I spotted Mt Greylock looming in the distance on the edge of visibility. In four days we will climb it's tall peak of 3500 feet and sleep there (bunkhouse at summit).

A few miles later we were at the road and Flicka's thumb didn't let me down. I made it to town while the library was open so check out the new videos and pics below! We caught up with some friends who just made it to town and told them what to expect the next 8 miles.
